Obituary for Wilmer C Nussbaum
Nussbaum, Wilmer C, age 96, of Dayton, passed away Thursday, July 20th, 2017 in Dayton. He was born October 24th, 1920, to Benjamin Nussbaum and Ruth Nussbaum (Zook).
After graduating from Fairbury Township High School in 1938, Wilmer attended the University of Illinois for three years. His education was interrupted to work as a detailer and tool designer in Dayton, Ohio, and later for military service; his education was completed at the University of Dayton. He saw the importance of education and started a foundation for students to go to college from both his and his wife’s high schools. He co-founded Mar-Con Tool Co., a precision machining and manufacturing company, in 1959. Some of their more intricate products performed critical functions on the first "Mariner" space craft. He served as the company president from its inception until he retired in 1984.
Wilmer served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1943 – 1946 and completed Parris Island SC Boot Camp as a Private First Class. He graduated as a Sergeant from the Engineering School at Camp LeJeune, NC, and as a 2nd Lieutenant from Officers Candidate School at Quantico, VA. He participated in the Battle of Okinawa and, at the War's close, accepted the surrender of a Japanese Garrison in Tientsin, China.
Wilmer was a member of MENSA since 1979, and as a member of the Dayton Optimist Club he served as President in 1986 as well as honored in 1997 as their "Man-of-the-Year”. He was also an active Mason and Shriner.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Mary (Hodson) Nussbaum. He is survived by daughters, Jane Nussbaum of Massachusetts, Ruth Nussbaum-Borden of North Carolina, and Susan Lisle (Ted) of North Carolina; one granddaughter Meredith Lisle Goebel (Michael) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.
