Obituary for Catherine M Hieber

Hieber, Catherine M, ("Kitty") age 93, of Bellbrook, passed away Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Marco and Xenia Batritchevitch and brothers Michael and Christian Batritchevitch. She is survived by her sister Christine Webber of Texas. Catherine's children, Joan McDonald, Karen Rase, Jeff Hieber, and Pia Hieber-Hall, were the focus of her long life. She also cherished the company of her grandchildren, Devin, Katie, Kelly, Kris, Joe, Abby, Aiden, and Gavin, and looked forward to meeting her three new great-grandchildren Owen, William and Nathaniel.

Catherine's extraordinary life began on March 6, 1925 in Belfort France. She attended Catholic schools in Nice and excelled in tennis, becoming a regional champion of southern France in her teens. She also studied nursing which led to her assignment as an Army nurse stationed in Nazi-occupied Paris during WWII.

Fighting for the French Resistance, her expert linguist skills caught the attention of the enemy and she was detained as a translator by the Nazis when they discovered she spoke as many as eight languages. The starvation of her fellow comrades and constant shelling of Paris would haunt her for life.

Catherine re-entered the medical field and became a phlebotomist at the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio for 11 years. She also studied rehabilitation at Eastern Kentucky University and Wright State University, graduating from there in 1975. She obtained a massage therapy license in 1992 and become a medical massage therapist in 1993, eventually spending 12 years at the Oakwood Massage Therapy Clinic before becoming a private masseuse.

Catherine was a true gourmet cook and relished the fish market and fresh produce along the French Riviera during her travels back to Nice to visit friends and family.

She also enjoyed the company of good friends, Margie, Tara, Rowena, Phyllis, Laura and Betty. Her family would like to extend their gratitude to Pia Hieber-Hall (Dave) of Raleigh, N.C. and Catherine's many caregivers for their constant care and support after her long illness and debilitating strokes.

Family and friends are invited to her Life Celelbration Visitation at Conner & Koch Life Celebration Home, 92 W Franklin St, Bellbrook, OH 45305 on Monday October 29, 2018 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 30th, 2018 at 10:30am at Holy Angels Church, 1322 Brown St, Dayton, Ohio 45409, Burial will follow at Bellbrook Cemetery.
