Charles "Charlie" Fyffe's Obituary
Charles Bryan Fyffe, more commonly known as "Good time Charlie," age 86, of Bellbrook, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020.
Charlie was born July 29th, 1934 to Ollie Fyffe and Marie Fyffe (Holbrook). He grew up in Kentucky where he was required to leave school at a young age to work on the farm for his family. When it was time for him to start work as a coal miner, he decided instead to take a bus, at only seventeen, to look for work. He found his way to Dayton where he worked a short time for General Motors and then settled into a career as a stonemason. Years later, he decided to open Fyffe's Canoe Rental in Bellbrook, which he owned and operated for over 20 years. His vivacious personality and ability to turn any stranger into a friend made for a thriving business full of loyal customers.
Charlie lived a life full of activity, adventure, and good times. In his younger years, he raced boats and was even the National Hydroplane Champion in 1965 and 1966. He coached his boys in baseball, loved to ride motorcycles, could weld anything made, and liked to wheel and deal at auctions.
Once he sold his business and retired, he was able to travel. He spent time in the United Kingdom, even driving in a rental car from England all the way to Inverness, Scotland. He traveled with his boat to Sarasota, Florida in the winter, and Lake Erie in the summer, fishing at both stops. He converted an old ambulance into a camper which he used to travel around the country. He also went on several cruises, enjoying both the sunshine in the Caribbean and the mountains in Alaska.
Charlie loved to meet new people, and once he knew them, he loved them for life, but was still willing to take their money in a game of Texas Hold 'Em. He enjoyed being an amateur photographer and capturing all the memories he made and the adventures he took on camera. He was extremely proud of his family and was always accepting, loving, and present. He will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ollie and Marie Fyffe (Holbrook), brother Joe Fyffe, and sister Bonnie Cantrell.
Charlie is survived by children James Fyffe, Douglas (Sherri) Fyffe, and Deborah Bull, nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
