Darryl E. McGill's Obituary
MCGILL, Darryl E., age 73, of Bellbrook, and formerly of Mentor, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Darryl honorably served in the United States Navy Reserves and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University in 1973. He later earned his law enforcement certificate from Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and served as a police officer in Wickliffe, Ohio for several years. Following his achievement of a Master of Business Administration from Lake Erie College in 1982, Darryl worked for more than two decades at LTV Steel, where he served as a labor relations negotiator. Most recently, Darryl worked as the human resources director at Lofino Foods. His work was complemented by a SHRM certification in Human Resources and Labor Relations and a 6Sigma certification in Lean Continuous Improvement.
Darryl was a member of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church and was very involved in his community. He served as a board member of the Green Meadow Ranch Homeowner’s Association, Bellbrook Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Board, Charter Review Commission, and Bellbrook City Council.
Known for his warmth, kindness, and incredible sense of humor, Darryl had a natural ability to make friends and a knack for bringing joy to others. He was an amateur radio enthusiast and loved interacting with others through this hobby. Darryl and his wife, Karen, enjoyed going out for trivia night, where he could show off his extensive knowledge of many things, especially music. His love of music also involved performing. A talented guitarist, Darryl also enjoyed playing the mandolin and harmonica, and it was common to find him performing for loved ones. His artistic abilities also included drawing. Creating zentangle doodles while relaxing at home became a favorite pastime. Darryl was an avid Cleveland Browns fan, dedicating his Sunday afternoons to watching the games while simultaneously listening to the radio broadcast.
Darryl’s greatest joy in life was his family. He thrived in his role as the fun dad and grandpa and shared plenty of laughter with his sons and grandkids. He was a natural provider, caring deeply for the well-being of those closest to him. Darryl’s preparedness in all situations was one of his many ways of caring for his family. He was dedicated to his sons’ track and cross country careers, supporting them both as an assistant coach and as the provider of his famous vanilla French toast on the mornings of their events. Darryl’s morning routine also included leaving hand-drawn notes and cartoons for Karen and the boys before leaving for work. Darryl shared many memorable trips with Karen, including cruises along Mexico, Europe, and Alaska, as well as visits to numerous national parks and a special trip by train across the country. His love for family extended to his four-legged companions, Cassidy, Chloe, and Lilly, who brought him great joy.
Darryl was preceded in death by his father, Ralph McGill. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Karen McGill; two sons, Bryan (Melanie) McGill and Todd McGill (Courtney Melzer); five grandchildren, Allyson, Brandon, Lincoln, Signe, and Miles; his mother, Laverne McGill; and one brother, Craig (Marsha) McGill.
The family will receive friends from 1 PM to 3 PM on Sunday, February 23, at Conner and Koch Funeral Home in Bellbrook. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 3 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. A mass in Darryl’s honor will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, February 25, at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church in Dayton. Father Satish Joseph will be officiating the mass. If desired, contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation. Condolences at www.connerandkoch.com.
