David Michael "Mike" Sonnycalb's Obituary
Sonnycalb, David Michael “Mike”, age 77, of Centerville and formerly of Bellbrook, passed away while surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Miami Valley Hospital - Main in Dayton.
Mike spent most of his life in Bellbrook, where he enjoyed cookouts and off-roading with many of his lifelong friends. He graduated from Bellbrook High School, class of 1966. He honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and would often recount stories from his time served on Okinawa. After leaving the military, he earned his associate’s degree in business from Miami-Jacobs Career College but preferred working outdoors. He held many positions over the years, primarily at Carboline Coatings and in construction. He worked as a carpenter with Pryor Construction and Davis Remodeling for over 20 years, finally retiring in 2017. He enjoyed sharing his finish carpentry skills with his family and friends and would regularly help neighbors with tasks. He served on the board of the Fox Run Condo HOA for over 25 years, including many years as the Board President. His favorite part of being on the board was deciding when to open and close the pool because it brought so many wonderful memories.
Mike was a lifelong Ohio State Buckeyes fan and was over the moon when two of his granddaughters decided to attend OSU. He was very proud of his family and never missed a chance to spend time with his brother, children and grandchildren. He loved being together at the pool, cooking out, canoeing, and watching movies. Mike loved the holidays and Christmas Eve was especially important to him because the whole family came together to exchange gifts, a tradition going back to the 1970’s. Mike celebrated Native American culture and the natural world. Over time, he had gathered a substantial collection of Native American pottery and artwork. Among many things, he will be remembered for being the most generous and welcoming person you could have met. Mike would do anything for anyone, no matter how much of his time it took or how much money it cost. He was always there for his friends and family.
Mike was preceded in death by wife, Carol Sonnycalb, in 2013; his parents, David and Betty Sonnycalb; and his girlfriend, Jenny Soloman, in 2018. He is survived by his son, Matt (Anu) Sonnycalb; his daughter, Nicole (James) Treloar; four granddaughters, Madelyn, Elizabeth, Meena, and Asha; one brother, Mark (Michelle “Mick”) Sonnycalb; his nephew, Andy Sonnycalb; niece, Ashley Brown; the mother to his children, Mary Ritchie; special family members Allison Corrigan, Stephen Ritchie as well as Addison, Ace, Jessie, and Lionel Royster.
A celebration of life service will be at 7 pm on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Conner & Koch Funeral Home in Bellbrook. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm on Monday at the funeral home. If desired, contributions may be made to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. Condolences at https://www.connerandkoch.com.
