In memory of Donna Martin - she will be missed.
Donna's and Marieta's mothers were sisters, and the girls grew up as close as sisters themselves. The summer of 1939, Donna (15), Marieta (17), Peary Jr. (19), and Myrle (21) (Marieta's brothers) planned a canoe trip down the Des Moines River. The boys built the canoes from scratch and added rudders and sails. It was a two day, 50 mile adventure from the Red Rock scenic area to the dam at Ottumwa City, Iowa. "What fun we had paddling over the water, winding along enjoying the scenery, woods, pastures, fields, and high banks. In the evening we stopped and made a comfortable camp, After a good night's sleep on feathery willow branches, we headed down river. When we reached the lake behind the dam, we hoisted our sails and let the wind move us along. We set up camp, went into Ottumwa City to have dinner and go to a movie. After a good night's sleep, we had an early breakfast and paddled our way back up river to shallow water where we met our parents. Oh, what a wonderful, memorable adventure during our young lives." (This is the Reader's Digest version.) Donna and Marieta, and the brothers, along with other beloved family members, are celebrating their reunion in heaven. Love, Sherrie McCorkle, Marieta's daughter.
So many wonderful memories of you Donna. Summer swimming....sleeping on the island...skating on the pond served with hot cocoa....sleep overs....that big tree house.... running bare footed...playing in the creek...playing in the woods and swinging from the vines. Just to name a few. You were always close by. Whenever we talked on the phone I would identify myself as your other daughter. You would laugh and agree! I was blessed to have you in my life and you will be missed by all! My deepest sympathy to your whole family. Cindy
"Mom, you taught me a wealth of knowledge about life. Thank you! I love and cherish you dear sweet Mother more than words can say! Your loving daughter, Linda S Martin
