ARLING, Elmer Henry
Age 90 of Centerville, passed away November 16, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born on January 1, 1924, the son of Henry and Bertha (Keiser) Arling. As a boy, he was raised on the family farm in St. Patrick, Ohio, and was very proud of his farming roots. Elmer was preceded in death by brother Walter and sisters Dorothy and Irene. He is survived by brother Virgil (Martha) Arling of Minster, Ohio. During WW II Elmer honorably served his country in the US Army in Europe, where he was awarded two bronze stars. He attended Miami Jacobs College and was a 1949 graduate of the University of Dayton. After college, Elmer was employed by Standard Thompson and NCR. He retired after 38 years at NCR, where he held various sales and management positions - most recently the Manager of Operations, Computing Services Institute. One of Elmer’s proudest accomplishments during his time at the “Cash” was directing the planning, building, and operations of the Sugar Camp Educational Campus. Elmer was a founding and long-time member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish, where he served on the finance committee and as a Keenager member. The practice of his faith was a lifelong commitment for him. He served as committee member and treasurer of Bellbrook Boy Scout Troop 75 and helped to organize annual Army veteran reunions for his unit. He also loved to attend youth sporting events and big band summer concerts. Elmer was totally dedicated to his large, extended Arling and Wing family and was most happy whenever they could be together and share their love for each other. This past January, his birthday was celebrated with a joyous party of over ninety of his closest family and friends. During his long life, he exemplified a spirit of helpfulness, kindness and community. In his words and in his actions, he provided a strong and positive example for his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Mildred (Wing) Arling, three sons, Stephen (Brenda) Arling, Daniel (Kate) Arling and Gregory (Susan) Arling, two daughters, Karen (Don) Berni and Beth (Randy) Tischer, 11 grandchildren, Emily (Zack) Cline, Leslie Tischer, Melissa Tischer, Jennifer Arling, Ryan (Crystal) Arling, Claudia Scott, Matthew Arling, Justin Arling, Rachel Arling, Alison Arling and Jeffrey Arling, 3 great-grandchildren, Henry Cline, Oliver Cline, Rylynd Arling, as well as many, many beloved nieces and nephews of the Arling and Wing clans. The family will receive friends Tuesday November 18th from 6-8 pm at CONNER & KOCH Life Celebration Home, 92 W. Franklin St., Bellbrook (937-848-6651. A second visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 am before the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 19th at St. Francis of Assisi Church (Wilmington Pike, Centerville).
