J. David Matney's Obituary
MATNEY, J. David, age 79, of Bellbrook, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024.
David earned an associate’s degree from Clark State University and began his career in factory work before enlisting in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. After his service, he spent over a decade working at NCR, leaving in the 1980s when the company relocated its headquarters to Georgia. He then worked for DESC for a few years before becoming an aircraft mechanic at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. David retired in 2004 after completing 20 years of combined active duty and reserve service. He was also a devoted member of Hope United Methodist Church.
A proud family man, David’s devotion to his wife, Christina, and daughter, Kelly, was evident in everything he did. Special memories were created during their many trips to Florida, where they enjoyed family time at the beach and visiting relatives. Humble and reserved in nature, David found joy in simple pleasures, from cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes to tending to his lawn and flower beds. He cherished the companionship of his many dogs over the years and was known as a reluctant but loving cat dad. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and fondly remembered hunting in his youth. David took pride in being a good friend, often seeking ways to help others. David was eager to lend a hand, whether it was a home repair, car repair, or even driving friends to an appointment. Among many things, David will be remembered for his thriftiness, collection of coupons, and trademark question, “How much did you pay for gas?”
David was preceded in death by his wife, Christina Matney, in 2011; his parents, Jesse Edward Matney and Gertrude Matney; and one brother, John Paul Matney. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Matney; two sisters, Barbara (LaVaughn) Congleton and Nellie (Jay) Poole; and family friend, Anita Krull; and Anita’s family.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 3, at Conner & Koch Funeral Home in Bellbrook. Pastor Jason Bunger will be officiating the service. Burial with military honors will be at Bellbrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 3, at the funeral home. If desired, contributions may be made to SISCA or Hospice of Dayton. Condolences at www.connerandkoch.com.
