Mary Ann Stone (Carter)'s Obituary
Mary Ann Stone was born on July 4th, 1937 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Hazel (Horton) and Luther Carter. She was an inspiring servant leader and positive role model to many people. She was a 1955 graduate of Portsmouth High School, 1958 graduate of Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing (Cincinnati) and became a registered nurse summer of 1958. In the mid 1980's, Mary Ann earned a degree in Business Administration from Antioch College.
Mary Ann was passionate about parish nursing and health ministries, helping people, loving animals, and engaging in the community and her church, Bellbrook United Methodist Church (since 1964), where she was active in many committees and held leadership positions. She was a certified lay speaker, a certified lay
minister (CLM), and minister for Pastoral Care and Health Ministries at Bellbrook United Methodist Church. Mary Ann founded Open Arms Health Clinic because of her passion that people be treated for their physical health needs. She worked in ICU at Kettering Memorial Hospital during the mid-60’s and was recruited to help start the Greene Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Mary Ann was a member of the Bellbrook Fire Department Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT), the health coordinator for the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Twp. Disaster Plan, a certified Red Cross Emergency Shelter Coordinator, and the nurse for Bellbrook Boy Scout Explorer Post (affiliated with the Red Cross). She was a Girl Scout leader and Bellbrook Girl Scouts Neighborhood Chairman. Mary Ann volunteered with Greene County Combined Health District to administer flu shots and with the Greene County Council on Aging to check blood pressures for Senior Citizens. She was a 2010 Greene County Women's Hall of Fame Inductee, and the recipient of the First Annual National Health Ministries Association "Granger Westberg Leadership in Faith Community Nursing Award” in 2012. She was also a member of the Southwest Ohio Health Ministries Association, National Health Ministries Association, Common Cup (association of Greene County United Methodist churches), and Bellcreek Senior Citizens. She was an Amateur (Ham) Radio operator since 1959 (Call Sign K8RCJ), a charter member of the Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club and member of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association, the ARRL—National Organization for Amateur Radio, and the Quarter Century Wireless Association. Mary Ann wrote two books and earned many other awards and recognitions.
She enjoyed watching football, especially Auburn University and Cincinnati Bengals. She also enjoyed sewing, camping and hiking, bicycling the bike trails, reading, word seek puzzles and Spider Solitaire on the computer. In her younger years, she enjoyed tennis, softball and golf, and girls sports in high school.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 55 years, Fred Stone; daughter Kathy "Kat" Doyle (Matt) of Cumming, Georgia; son David Stone (Kelli) of Westmoreland, Tennessee; daughter Amy Stone of Belmont, North Carolina; four grandchildren Casey Doyle, Kylee (Matt) Cameron, Samantha Stone, Zach Clark.
Mary Ann passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Quaker Heights Care Community, Waynesville. She was 77. The family invites you to gather for a life celebration visitation Sunday, April 26th, from 5-8 pm at CONNER & KOCH Life Celebration Home, 92 W. Franklin St., Bellbrook. A Life celebration memorial
services will continue on Monday at 10:30 am at the Bellbrook United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Darryl Fairchild, with an informal fellowship and light luncheon to follow.
