Phyllis A. Garstka

Phyllis Garstka, beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024 at the age of 94. Born on February 7, 1930, to Clarence and Marcella Menker, Phyllis was the second oldest of eight siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband John as well as three of her brothers, Charles, Clarence “Jim” and Robert “Bobby” Menker, and two sisters, Rosemary Bachey and Joanna Colston. She is survived by her brother George Menker and sister Marcella “Tootsie” (Fred) Dye. Phyllis graduated from Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton and was a founding member of St.Helen’s Catholic Church, where she generously contributed her time. Her professional journey began as a travel coordinator at EF McDonald Travel Company, a position she cherished for many years, allowing her to share her passion for exploration. She also worked at Miami Valley Hospital, embodying her spirit of service. A devoted wife to her husband John, Phyllis was a proud mother of three: John Jr. “Jack” (Diane), Michele Martins and Victoria “Vicki” (Ed) Waker. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren: Zachary (Amy Haverstick), Alex, Ben (Emily) Martins, Chris Phillips, Nicole (Matt) Jackson, Rebecca (Andrew) Torres, Jake (Clarissa) Phillips, Allison (Cameron) Esses - and twelve great-grandchildren: Ada, Zelena, Miles, Izzi, Stella, Charlie, Eleanor, Alana, Drew, Greg, Aiden and Johnny. Phyllis was a wonderful cook. Every meal in her home was a full spread, and no one ever left hungry. Her family will always fondly remember her homemade noodles and the days spent making and drying them all over the house. Phyllis also shared her love for the kitchen with her son Jack and she was instrumental in his restaurant, sharing her knowledge of Polish cuisine through delicious pierogis, cabbage rolls and cream pies. She made her home a gathering place for all occasions—whether it was a daycare for her grandchildren, the venue for birthday or holiday parties, or even just a card night she was always ready to host. An avid traveler, Phyllis spoke fondly of her adventures, particularly her transformative journey she organized to China. She enjoyed exploring the world, with cherished memories of trips to Thailand, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. Phyllis also expressed her love through the blankets, clothes, and other crafts she made for her friends and family. Sewing, embroidery, crocheting, ceramics, and Swedish weaving were her favorite pastimes. Her last favorite activity that she held onto until the end was Sunday Funday’s. Where she would attend mass and follow the service up with either margaritas or bloody mary’s because nothing celebrates the Lord’s day of rest quite like a post worship toast. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to noon Thursday, October 17, at St.Helen’s Parish in Dayton. A Mass and luncheon will immediately follow the visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ohio Valley Hospice (2601 Mission Point Blvd. Suite 310, Beavercreek, OH 45431) or the Alzheimer’s Association.
