First of all I want to express my sympathy to Mark’s family and community of friends for your loss. I observed in this morning’s edition of the Dayton Daily News the obituary of Mark Barkalow. I was drawn to read the entire obituary as the name Barkalow was mentioned periodically to me by my late father whose maternal aunt Mary Louise Yingling married John Fox Barkalow. Their son Bruce Barkalow was my father Fred Werner’s 1st cousin. Fred’s mother was Emma Yingling Werner, the sister of Mary Louise Yingling Barkalow.
My late Aunt Eva Wener Friedline (Fred’s sister) was a long time resident of Germantown, having married Edgar Friedline and raised their son my 1st cousin Donald Eugene Friedline. I noticed in Mark’s obituary that it was his family that owned the farmland that became Jamaica Run golf course. My cousin Donald Friedline purchased a part of that farmland with frontage on Jamaica road and lived there for many years with his wife Relma Heitz and their three childrenPamela, Darlene and John. Relma’s family also owned a farm on Jamaica road.
If Mark ever hit an errant golf ball anywhere close to my cousin’s back yard, as apparently many golfers did, I can attest to you that Donald Friedline would place that ball into what became dozens of egg cartons. As a matter of fact I rarely had to buy any golf balls during my golfing days thanks to Don.
I regret not having met Mark as we both worked at The Reynolds and Reynolds Company where I was a VP of R&D during the 1980s.
My Grandfather William Christian Werner who came from Kirchheim Unter Tech Germany at age 15 first lived in Gratis in Preble County where he married Emma Yingling. Later he brought his family to Germantown where he had the town’s bakery that was then located immediately to the west of the Florintine (sp) Hotel.
I am not at all sure if the following Barkalow’s were directly related to Mark and his ancestors but I thought that Mark and My cousin Donald Friedline may have known each other during their school years in Germantown.Donald was born in Germantown a little more than three years after Mark’s birth. Donald was born June 7, 1928. He passed away May 16, 2006 and is buried in Germantown.
Here is a brief about the Barkalows that my father Fred Werner used to talk about.
