Patricia Adeline Hines (Brady)'s Obituary
Patricia "Patsy" Adeline Hines, age 90, of Centerville, passed away on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at her home in the St. Leonard's Community.
She was born on July 17, 1932 in Port Chester, NY to Colonel George S. Brady and Adeline Kelley Brady. Patsy grew up as the youngest of four in Washington DC, and then later Bethesda, Maryland, with a short stint in Boston, Massachusetts where she lived through the hurricane of 1938. Unbeknownst to them both, she attended the same Kindergarten as her future husband, Bill Kerlin, in Washington DC, and reconnected with him when they were both sophomores at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda Maryland.
After graduation, she attended St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland where she majored in English, played the saxophone in the college band, was a cheerleader, and made lifelong friendships and memories that she cherished. As a faithful and proud Irish-Catholic, she loved her experience at St. Joseph’s and was very active with the alumnae events. She frequently attended the college reunions, and stayed several times with the nuns at the Daughters of Charity provincial house, some of whom had been her teachers at SJC. She began studying for her Franciscan membership during college, and she visited the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC in the mid 2000’s to locate her records and complete the program.
She and Bill married in September of 1954, and began filling their nursery! They first lived in northern Virginia, then Kensington, Maryland, before moving in the early 1960's with their 6 young children to Phoenix, Arizona, where they added their two youngest children. Sadly, Bill passed away in 1968. In 1971, Patsy met and married Dean Hines and together they added two more children to the brood. They lived in Arizona until 1974, when they moved back to Maryland to care for Patsy's elderly father. In 1988, they returned to Arizona before Dean passed away in 1991. In between all the moving, there were many camping and fishing trips to the mountains of Arizona, the Maryland shore, and to Devil’s Lake in Ontario, Canada.
After his death, she continued to live in Arizona before moving to Spokane, Washington where she enjoyed many happy years living with her son, George. During the years that she lived in Spokane she had the opportunity to spend a lot of time worshipping and studying at Gonzaga University, where she sparred with priests and lecturers over theology, history, and Christian living, and even became the Gonzaga Bulldogs “Zags” men’s basketball team's number one fan. She eventually moved to St. Leonard’s in Centerville, Ohio in 2010. Her move to the beautiful and historically Franciscan community at St. Leonard's enriched her faith journey and provided many activities and events for her to enjoy.
Patsy was always happy to explore and enjoy the beauty of God’s earth with friends and family. She explored much of the beautiful waters, woodlands, deserts, mountains, beaches and parks of the United States and Canada, happily participating in every activity whether it was camping, fishing, boating, swimming, or picnicking. Patsy enjoyed writing community interest stories for the local newspaper and volunteering with her church and at local libraries. She had talent and creativity, which she used as an accomplished knitter and seamstress, in assembling and designing dollhouses, as a gifted pianist, saxophone player, and ukulele novice, and through her beautiful drawing and paintings. She was also a good gardener and cook, making delicious jams and jellies, canning her garden vegetables, and even learning how to bake and decorate deliciously beautiful cakes. She celebrated her Irish heritage, supported, attended, and participated in all of her kids many activities, and always looked forward to the annual family reunions that were held each July on her birthday weekend. Patsy never passed a yard sale she couldn't stop at.
She leaves behind to honor her memory, her children, William Kerlin III, Marty Kerlin, George Kerlin, Alice Camuti, Mary Davison, Paula Schoeffler, David Kerlin, Deana Caputo, and Edie Hulburd, 18 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and many in-laws and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Adeline Brady, siblings Jeanne, Bette, and Stuart, husband William "Bill" Kerlin, Jr., husband Dwight Dean Hines, and her son Gerry Kerlin.
