Could We Do It Again It was back during World War Two When times were pretty hard.Every old plow point we could findWe took to Cecil Robinette's Junk Yard.There was a scrap drive going onAnd we wanted to do our share.Shoes were rationed tooBut we never got but one pair. We would wear themTill they were full of holesThen my Pa took the iron lastAnd put us on some half soles.Gas, tires, sugar and coffeeAll these were rationed toWe bought beans for five cents a poundAnd it took more than just a phew.The things we couldn't grow on the farmWe bought mostly at Jake Robinette's storeWith the eggs that Mama had savedFrom about forty old hens or more. Emmitt Fannon was a clerk at the storeAnd Mama would give him her list to fillThen if anything was left overHe would write her a due bill.While PA and Mama visited with Jake and VergieKenny, Jack and I would have some fun Sometimes we played Cowboy and IndiansWith make believe guns.Kenny and I went to the rail yardAnd hopped on an empty box carThey were switching and when they metIt gave us a pretty big jar.Those days if you were going somewhereAnd lucky enough to have a carYou were bound to have a flat or twoBefore you got too far.You might make it to the dugoutOr a little farther down the roadBut when that old tire started flappinEverybody had to unload.When we got to Gate CityWe might go in the cafeYou got six plays for a quarterOn the juke box those days.We might go on to KingsportIf there wasn't a big hurryA sign going into town said,"Is this trip necessary?"Our brothers and friends were overseasFighting to keep our country free.The women worked in defense plantsTo help beat the enemy.My sisters worked in the shipyardIn Portsmouth across the bay.I sure did miss themWhile they were away.Everyone pulled togetherCause we had a war to win.I wonder if it happened todayCould we ever do it again?
